RAW launched the Big Blue Farmer in conjunction with the Southern Midlands Council in 2019. The Farmer sits at the Southern entrance to Oatlands, as a reminder for us to look out for each other. The project promotes mental health and wellbeing by encouraging communities to be supportive of its members, which fosters resilience in tough times.

People from all walks of life in the local community have been involved in the Oatlands project. Local farmhands made the steel frame for the body. The farmers’ clothes are made from recycled baling twine donated by farmers, and have been knitted and woven by patrons at Agfest, residents at the Midlands Multipurpose Health Centre, Oatlands District High School students and members of the Oatlands community.

Blue Farmers have since been installed in Deloraine and Bothwell, and a small maquette is on exhibition as part of the sculpture trail at Art Farm, Birchs Bay.
